Dave's end of the hangar

You know this was the year……I told myself that I live in Florida…..We are supposed to take life easy…..Relax.  Sleep in.  Go to the beach.  Go dancing.

Yes that was my New Years Resolution and yes I have already failed at that one.  Maybe next year I can make it to Feburary.

We have started this year with a bang, all kinds of new stuff going on down here in sunny Florida.  But first let me talk about something really cool.

First Saturday

Our First Saturday at LoPresti event for February has a very special speaker.  Steve Wittman.  Actually this will be the world premier of the “Steve Wittman Remembered”.  We had a Disney film crew record Steve Wittman’s last air show that he flew on his 90th birthday and they followed that up with a great interview.  Wittman was a race pilot, airplane designer, builder and EAA member.  Wittman has the record for winning the most races and the longest career.  When he was 85 he decided that he should step aside and let some of younger pilots have a shot.  You know those upstart 70 year old kids were complaining.

Steve Wittman was a driving force in the creation of the home built and experimental aircraft market..

This is a part of our aviation history and every aviation enthusiast and pilot should be here.

Not sure your Sweetheart will want to be at the airport?  Well we have taken care of that.  This is our Sweetheart First Saturday and we have a nationally recognized Chef fixing our breakfast.  Karen Siegel has run top restaurants and has been featured on Oprah.  I have been to Karen’s restaurant I never wanted to leave.  Karen lives in Milwaukee and she sends us “Care Packages” when we are exhibiting at Airventure.  It’s kind of interesting to see 8 guys camping at a house in Oshkosh standing around talking about the nuances of flavor.

Sebring Report

We started our trade show year extra early this year at the US Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring.  This was a great show and the enthusiasm of pilots and manufacturers was contagious.  The atmosphere, even with cold, wet, rainy weather, was upbeat.  We have new stuff planned for the LSA market and it will be fun

Fury Shows

We are working on this year’s calendar for Fury appearances.  Corkey Fornof will be flying his famous P-51 show in our LoPrestiFury at Sun-N-Fun and at Mid-Atlantic Fly-in & Sport Aviation Convention in Lumberton, NC.

The Fury will also be touring Florida Fly-in Communities in February and March.

New Stuff

We just bought a SR-22.  That is one slick airplane but we have some new stuff coming for this plane.

We have a new front page on our website.  Look at www.SpeedMods.com and tell me what you think.

Fury National Tour
J.W.”Corkey” Fornof

Back in the saddle again, YIPPEE! 0 dark thirty, I sat in the Fury ready to launch out of McKinney, TX, headed to Vero Beach. I could not believe the FSS briefer, he told me, CAVU with 30 to 50 KT. Tail winds for the entire flight. Oh how the Fury loves the 39 temp. Like a home sick angel we climb to 7,500 FT. and head east. The sun is just peeking over the horizon; red, orange, yellow sunbeams light the earth and sparkle on the patches of frost. This is a dream flight. The air is smoother than a baby’s butt, not a cloud to be seen and with the tailwind we’re going like an eagle with its tail on fire. Ladies and Gents, days like this are but one of the reasons I love flying. Hahaha, sure you knew I had to roll it, and around we went watching the sunrise with a twist. I sat back and watched the world go by planning my mid-way stop at Bruton, AL. With the winds I could have gone a lot further but my bladder has a shorter range than the Fury’s. I was also needing to warm up - at 7500 FT. it was 15F. Curt has assured me that the production Fury will have a heater. Bruton is also a bounce field for the Navy; it was interesting watching them work. There was the Navy portable tower and four T-34C working the pattern. I just called in and they worked me into their operation. At the pumps it was the normal situation for Fury refueling. You put the nozzle in the tank and answer questions about the Fury, give the line boy your credit card and answer more questions. Usually one person asks if he/she can sit in it and so you let several sit in it. It’s hard not share the Fury; the looks, ohs and ahs are worth the time. So, after an hour and 20 mins, I mount up to continue the flight to the adult Disney Land called LoPresti Speed Merchants. As I departed the area, I radioed the Navy boys, thanked them for working me in, told them to keep up the good work and that I was proud of ‘em. Without fail, every one of them radioed back saying, “Thank you Sir, it was a pleasure, would you be interested in a trade, this is a low time T-34.” I had to laugh to myself as I climbed out in the clear sky thinking, “man I remember when I was like them, I think it was last Tuesday.”

The remaining leg to Vero was just like the first; smooth with great tail winds. With the sun up for a few hours and shining into the cockpit it was comfortable, still cold but comfortable. As I approached Orlando I decided I would go over the class B airspace. At 11,500 Ft. I could see Tampa and the Gulf of Mexico to my right and the Cape to my left with Vero Beach straight ahead. Passing the edge of the Class B airspace I started down. WOW, GPS ground speed 246 KTS. I let the Fury’s speed run up to 220 KTS indicated and the GPS read 272 KTS. ground speed — that’s 315 MPH - I like that, that’s Mustang speeds. I zip into Vero, taxi up to LoPresti, shut it down and smile thinking, what a flight.

I’m looking forward to the coming year, the Fury tour and the exciting things LoPresti SpeedMerchants has lined up. Wish I could tell you some of them, no I wouldn’t have to kill you, Curt and Rj would kill me! We’re starting off with the LSA event at Sebring FL 16-20. We’re also locking down our major tour events, which will be posted on the Fury site. I met a number of great people last year and know that number will increase this year. Fury Fever is intoxicating and catching —- Penicillin won’t cure it – if there is a cure, I don’t want to know about it!

Sebring, FL. The LSA EXPO was very interesting to say the least. It rained on and off every day but Saturday. I was impressed with the event turnout in spite of the weather. Some of these folks had to be golfers for they were there with umbrellas and rain gear; nothing was going to stop them.

The Fury and I were there on display and asked many times if it was a Light Sport Plane. “No, it’s a fast sports plane” I would say. “WOW”, this is beautiful, is what I heard most. I would bet that the Fury was the most photographed flying machine there. Rj and Curt were busy with one meeting after the other; everyone wants LoPresti to get them more speed and performance. The BoomBeams, Wireless Headset (Clear Bluetm), the I-POD system (Intuitiontm) and ClearViewtm  Camera system kept all of us talking and busy. Several aviation mags came by for pics and want to do full stories on the Fury and I look for those in the future. My basic job was to fly the Fury and look pretty; I did half the job well!

Sunday was a complete wash, overcast skies, 48F, drizzle and 30KTS of wind gusting to 37KTS out of the East. The short flight back to Vero Beach was no picnic; it was rough chop, and rolling winds. I noticed that there was no chatter on the Vero Tower freq and was cleared to a straight in approach to runway 4 from 15 miles out. As I started my descent below 2,000 FT the chop got worse and the rolling winds got worse. Below 1,500 FT the roll was wild, rolling 30 to 40* both ways of wings level and the airspeed was now fluctuating 15 to 20KTS. This was a fly on situation and slow to taxi speed ASAP. There was a low time pilot waiting to take off at the end of the run way so to alert him I told the tower as I taxied, “Just to give you a PIREP, its sever chop and rolling winds below 2,000 FT.” He thanked me and a few seconds later the Student called and asked to return to the ramp. This was not flying weather. Even the birds were walking.

I know this week will be more fun. I have three demo rides to give and some fun film flying with Curt in the Cirrus as we do test work. Stay tuned folks.

Go Green With Speed Mods

Speed Mods not only give you more speed they make your plane more efficient. More efficient you can make your airplane the more Green you make your plane.  Speed Splitters are mods that cover your Pipers exposed flap hinge and reduces the drag.  Currently the Piper hinge is a forward facing C channel that is 3/4 of an inch wide with a big bolt in the end.  Very draggy.  Our SpeedSplitter covers this hinge with a properly shaped fairing that not only fully encloses the bracket it also encloses the bolt while still providing access for maintenance.  Other manufacturers cover just the front or just the rear we do the whole job and fully enclose this hinge.

Notice the shape of the fairing.  The front is a drastically different shape than the rear.  Aerodynamically the front shape must be different than the rear to work properly.
