David and his faithful Falcon inspect progress
on hangar
Dave's end
of the hangar
Let me tell you how I ended
last year. On New Years Eve my wife Anne and I went
kayaking on the Indian River near my mother's house. It
was getting toward sunset and we did not want to be out very
long. It was a nice hour or so paddle.
We timed our "cruise" so that
we were at one of our favorite spots for sunset-in a little
lagoon just to the north-east of Memorial Island in Vero Beach.
This spot has a great view of the sunset.
There were Cherokees from
Flight Safety flying overhead. (each one with a LoPresti
BoomBeam - very pretty)
There were dolphin splashing
nearby. You can hear them coming up for air and
chasing bait fish.
The sunset was spectacular.
It was a perfect end to a Florida day. It was a great way
to "sunset" 2008. It also made me stop and think about
what was important. I had my wife at my side. Mom
was doing great. Both of my boys are doing well.
Matt is at Duncan Avionics in Houston. Mike is going to
school and working with Corkey on a great Fury video.
Rebecca was due to come home from Baghdad.
When you stop and think about
what is really important you can come to realize that all of the
hubbub of the world's financial calamities are just a blip on
the radar.
Sure, it's tough right now for
everyone. We have had to change our plans for some of our
upcoming projects. Kinda reminds me of hurricane Francis.
What? Francis?
Before Francis my brother Curt
did a great job of preparing our company and our employees for
the storm. Some of our houses got more damage than others
but our core business and hangar survived virtually unscathed.
Good planning. But what does that have to do with our
economy? Well during the aftermath of Francis our offices
were in great shape. We had power. We had water.
We had clean clothes. We had food. Internet.
Telephone.
Not at full operation but at
least were prepared and continued on. There were some
uncomfortable and even embarrassing times when we went out into
the community. Almost everyone else had no power, no water
and cold MRE's for diner. We had planned well and were on our
way back to the office with air-conditioning and a hot shower
waiting.
I feel that this Financial
Storm is the same for us. Everyone else is laying off
employees and closing their doors when we are expanding.
Growing. Improving. Good planning again.
We just finished moving our
administration offices from Vero Beach to the Sebastian Airport.
Our factory personnel will move after our new 15,000 sf hangar
is completed. The new hangar will use the latest in "green" tech
to minimize the impact on our ecology PLUS, it will be more cost
effective. Great planning.
We are continuing with the
Fury and have new Mod projects for Cirrus and Diamond in the
pipeline.
We are designing for LSA's.
It's now going to be an easy year but with forsight and planning
we will grow in these challenging times.
It's almost embarrassing. Well
almost.

Fury National Tour
J.W."Corkey" Fornof
See the Fury and Corkey at
Women in Aviation meeting in Atlanta
February 25th through 28th.
more info link

WIAI Convention is next on our list, oh that
Women In Aviation International Convention in Atlanta. Several
thousand ladies who all speak aviation, ohhhhhhh yea, throw me
in that briar patch! I will be one of the main speakers there
and in fact will be talking with Patty Wagstaff. Our talk will
be entertaining as Patty and I seem to play off of each other.
We gave WIAI two Fury flights to auction off at the convention,
which has caused great excitement; I love to excite the ladies,
yes I know it’s the Fury but then I go with the Fury, I can live
with that! I can’t wait to get back to FL, check out the Fury
and head to Atlanta.
Now
you can't say that LoPresti doesn't support WIA. Curt and
Etta LoPresti, (both are pilots and they first meet at an
airshow), are doing their share. They have 2 girls who
maybe future pilots. Both girls love airshows and fly with
Corkey any time they get the chance. If you come to our
First Saturday events mostlikely you will see the girls there
helping with breakfast or the clean up after words.

Well, here I sit at 36,000 FT. on my way back to Dallas.
Orlando, FL, was 80 and clear and Dallas is 22 and
covered in ice. Where’s the Fury you ask? It’s down for
its annual and I miss it already. In the past three
weeks, the Fury and I traveled from Dallas to the LSA
convention in Sebring, FL, flew several people, did
photo missions both stills and film, gave two aviation
talks and did several magazine interviews. It has been
busy and annual time is the only time the Fury and I are
apart. I have had a chance to view some of the footage
we shot for the Fury Information Packet DVD. It is
energetic and filled with shots that have you saying “I
want to do that; be there. I want a Fury.” We should
have the information packet filled with DVD, pictures,
3-view drawings and other goodies ready for sale at
Sun-N-Fun. Come by our booth to get a glimpse of the
footage and see the Fury. We will also be flying several
aerobatic Fury shows there.
The LSA event was great. This is an exciting
development in aviation and I love it. Light sport
airplanes that are fun to fly, up to date avionics,
gadgets and fancy paint jobs. It seems like a rebirth of
aviation with modern materials, technology and some
trick accessories. I saw a heads up display that
projects the heads up display on the back of the
propeller. There were several new engines there and a
number of new LSAs. I must say that the staff and
volunteers make this show most enjoyable. As a vendor
with a booth and airplane to display they make it easy.
We no sooner pull into our booth and they’re there to
drill holes into the concrete to tie the plane down and
give you up to date information. I was the main speaker
for the Staff and volunteer dinner. I received many nice
compliments and no one threw anything at me so I
considered it a success, hahahahaha.
Monday was devoted to Dave Unwin from “Today’s Pilot”
Magazine of Great Britain (England to us in the
colonies). I have read many of Dave’s stories and he is
worth the read. The mag is also throughout Europe and
many other countries. A bit of a test pilot, Dave did
some stability tests, stalls and aerobatics. He was more
than pleased with the results and said the only thing he
didn’t like about the Fury was that he didn’t have one.
I find it entertaining to fly the Fury with prospective
customers or writers; they all marvel at the handling,
it’s too sexy for the ramp and what can they sell to
have one. No we don’t take kids in on trade!

Schedule: I get a lot of emails concerning where the
Fury will be this year. Well, it seems that the schedule
is ever changing as we have so many requests. We try to
accommodate them around some events which we make hard
commitments to such as Sun-N-Fun, OSH, CAF, AOPA, NBAA,
COPA etc. The best thing to do is keep checking our Fury
Schedule, which will be updated soon. Also, David
LoPresti does a great job of sending out advance notices
and press releases concerning the Fury Tour. If you
aren’t on our Email list do so, it’s worth it for
David’s News Letter alone.
Update: we are in our new offices at Sebastian, FL,
Airport and the new hangar is under construction as you
read this, unless you’re reading this after 8:00 PM,
before 6:00 AM or Sunday Florida time. LoPresti Aviation
is in the main terminal, which looks like a golf resort.

New LoPresti
Facility in Sebastian
Now for some good news from aviation.
LoPresti is expanding
and now has operations on two Florida airports.

As you can see from the photo above our new hangar facility at
the Sebastian airport is moving along quite quickly. We
expect to have the foundation poured this week and hope to move
in by Airventure time. Do you see the office building in
the background? In the background is our new office
building. We have already moved in there. We are not
leaving Vero Beach entirely. We will have a small
operation in part of our old building for the foreseeable future
and we are now partnered with
Vero Beach Avionics
who has taken over the balance of our old building as part of
their expansion in Vero Beach. You will still be able to
have LoPresti BoomBeams and speed mods installed there by VBA
after our two companies finish our building upgrades.

Our new facility in Sebastian will not be an "ordinary hangar".
First of all it will match the architecture of the current
office structure. Secondly, here's the cool part, we are
building this hangar using green technology. We are taking
this opportunity to improve the engineering and design well past
what is required by law. This will be a environmentally
friendly place with much lower carbon footprint. We will
have more on this "Green Hangar" in future months as all of the
bits and pieces come together.

First
Saturday at LoPresti
for photos of last months event
"LoPresti First Saturday to benefit Boy Scouts of America
Features Wilco Film's - A Pilot's Story, Vero Beach, Florida"
LoPresti Aviation
will host another in their series of "First Saturday" events in
the LoPresti hangar on the north ramp of the Vero Beach
airport
on March 7th starting at 9 am.
LoPresti First Saturday is about connecting
aviation to modern America.
The
founder of the company, Roy LoPresti, had a life long love of
aviation. As a boy of 5 he announced to his parents, he
was going to "design airplanes". A bold statement from the
son of poor first generation immigrants. But sure enough, he
entered NYU at 16 and graduated at 19 with a degree in aviation
engineering.
As a boy, Roy hung
around airports and airplanes every chance he got. However, what
was possible and even common 60 years ago, is neither today. Roy
bemoaned the loss of innocence and the lack of places for kids
and pilots to meet. So we opened "LeRoy's Cafe" as a
place for pilots and the community to "Hang Out". Later we added
First Saturday to formally bring the two together once a month
with a full breakfast, an interesting topic and a guest speaker.
Any proceeds we generate goes to a charity or a worthy cause. In
this way we get to give back to the community and provide a
place for pilots to gather. Best of all we get to do what Roy
wanted most...to share the dream of flight.
The
Speaker. The March "First Saturday" event
will feature Wilco films. "When I saw the trailer for A
Pilot's Story I immediately thought that these guys would be
great as First Saturday speakers. The tone of this film
matches our First Saturday events, connecting aviation and
airports to our local community. The imagery of the film
was great and after meeting Will Hawkins and Rico Sharqawi on I
just knew that these guys could tell a great story." said David
LoPresti.
"When David LoPresti
called to ask if we would consider being part of the LoPresti
First Saturday event I was really pleased. We just love to share
the love of flying and to promote our new film." Said Will
Hawkins.
The Charity
The
speakers will be proceeded by a full breakfast benefit for the
Boy Scouts of America, Indian River District. The scouts
will also serve and will have displays of Scouting Skills.
The
Indian River District of the Boy Scouts of America is made up of
more than 200 volunteers who operate 30 Scouting Units that
provide programs for almost 1,000 youth. These
units are Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, coed Venture Crews
and two Sea Scout Ships. The ages of the youth range from
7 years old to 18 years old for Cubs and Scouts and to 21 years
old for Venture and Sea Scouts.
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to help build
Character, Citizenship, and Physical and Mental Fitness in young
people. All programs are age appropriate.
The Indian River District of the Boy Scouts of America is a
part of the Gulf Stream Council that conducts all Scouting
activities from Boca Raton to Sebastian and out around Lake
Okeechobee and includes Okeechobee, Clewiston and Belle Glade.
The Indian River District covers all of Indian River County.
"This will be a great opportunity
for the community to see Boy Scouting skills and have a
fantastic breakfast at a great price. A Scout is thrifty."
said Brenda Carley, District Executive. "This is a great
example of how a local business can support Scouting or any
charity while introducing youth to the wider community."
The First Saturday Event is located at LoPresti Hangar, Vero
Beach Airport’s North Ramp, KVRB. 2620 Airport North Drive. Call
for information or RSVP Mimi Erskine, 772-562-4757.
