Dave's end
of the hangar
So...We are almost in the new
hangar. Like that wise man Maxwell Smart said, "We missed it
by That Much!"
We are in our offices but not
in the engineering building as yet. Real Soon Now we will
move our engineering/ shipping/receiving and QC departments to
our new Sebastian home.
We continue to have a presence
in Vero Beach and will be leaving our composite
fabrication staff in place in Vero Beach.
Moving...You know what that
means.
Of course there is a bunch of
"stuff" that we don't want or need anymore. So we will have some
great deals on used and new spinners, used stock Piper Cherokee
6, Lance, and Saratoga cowls.
These will be available during
our next First Saturday event on June 6th.

Sun N Fun Round up

Ok,
so Sun N Fun is not news anymore: It's history. It's still
fun to talk about. We did see a lower turn out but the
people that were there were spending money on their airplanes.
We still have a 4 week backlog on some kits as a result of the
sales from Sun N Fun. BIG FUN.
We tested our BoomBeam lights on
Gene McNeely's T-6 during the AeroShell Team's night show.
That turned out so good that we are doubling the lights on Genes
plane and putting them on the rest of the Teams planes too.
For a total of 6 LoPresti BoomBeams on each airplane.
Really neat. We will be shipping these extra lights out to
the AeroShell Team this week, so watch for these lights at their
shows.
So 6 BoomBeams sounds like a lot
of light? It is, but the current record holder for the
most BoomBeams is Matt Younkin's Beech 18. 13 BoomBeams on
one airplane. Now that's power!

LoPresti Innovation
In Aviation
Award winner for 2009 is Bede Corp
LoPresti Aviation is best known as
an engineering innovation company. Our founder Roy LoPresti was
well known for pushing the envelope of performance. He was
responsible for an incredible string of successful aviation
designs. The Grumman Tiger, Cheetah and Cougar; the Mooney
201,232,252 and 301all bear his signature. Not to mention the
Lunar Lander and of course the LoPresti Fury. It is that legacy
that has fueled LoPresti Aviation to create and hold more STC's
than any other aviation modification company in the world.
We treasure and guard that
reputation by our constant attention to new technologies and
appreciation of creative thinking.
It is that attention and
appreciation which has led us to the General Aviation community
itself is a prolific source of great ideas.
In
Roy LoPresti's name and in his memory the LoPresti family has
created a yearly award to recognize those ideas, which truly and
profoundly innovate General Aviation. The Roy LoPresti
"Innovation in Aviation Award."
Each year, one great idea, one
innovative design will win this award and be recognized as an
innovator.
A panel of 5-7 judges review
submissions and ultimately decide on the winner. These judges
are drawn from Aviation engineering, business, finance and
marketing.
The
winning innovator receives an Award designed and constructed by
the late Roy LoPresti to keep and care for one year. That winner
then joins the Judges for the same term (1 year) to review the
ideas of fellow innovators. Finally, LoPresti will offer the
winner assistance in developing the concept and productizing
their idea.
In the first expression of the
LoPresti Innovation In Aviation winner DeltaHawk has been
working with LoPresti to bring their product to a wider market.
In this next year you will see their engine gain certification
and we will work with them to create STC's for the burgeoning
Diesel market.
We are delighted to announce that
the second winner of The Roy LoPresti Prize for Innovation in
Aviation is Bede Inc. for their SpeedTracTM wheelpants. LoPresti
Aviation is delighted to announce that this wonderful idea has
been productized and will be available this year at Oshkosh for
the RV7 and RV10 aircraft.
LoPresti already scours the aviation
world for new ideas. To aid in that effort we are including in
our process a web site for the submission and protection of
those ideas.

LoPresti
Improves Cirrus By 300%
LoPresti makes a wide range of
VERY cool products. Our products increase speed, save fuel
and light up the sky. But what do you do for an encore when
you already make the number one product in your field? When
every new Cirrus since 2004 has been sold with the best
landing light in aviation? The LoPresti BoomBeamTM.
(When your product has become
the very definition of setting the bar really, really high?)
You raise the bar.

The new X2 BoomBeam from
LoPresti produces 300% more light on the same electrical
load and is half the weight. No Kidding... This
is worth repeating...
● THREE
times the light ● HALF the weight ●
No increase in electrical requirements
"Back
in 1997 when my brother David first proposed that we design
and market this technology I thought 'who the heck would buy
a high tech light? ' The old ones are cheap and easy to
change. But my father and brother pushed to develop this
technology. I was flat wrong. Everyone needs a better
safer more cost effective light. And now we are the market
leader in this technology," said Curt LoPresti, President
LoPresti Aviation. For
more than 7 years Cirrus Design has made LoPresti the
standard premier light for their aircraft, adding to its
safety record. The latest innovation, BoomBeam X2, adds
significantly to the range and safety zone of this already
industry leading light. Now with the X2 System you can see
obstacles at a much longer range allowing you to avoid
hazards and increase your comfort level in poorly lit
environments.
SO, Is that enough
improvement? Heck no. The X2 system is tunable.
Every pilot and aircraft is different and now you can tune
your X2 light to your Cirrus's specific desires. The
X2 System allows for ground "tuning" of your landing light.
A wide beam is best for most Cirrus' and has longer range
then the stock "Legacy BoomBeam". A tighter beam with
substantially longer range is available for aircraft with
LoPresti TriTips or Cirrus tip lights with a simple
adjustment.
What do LoPresti BoomBeam X2
owners say about this new light?
"I
HIGHLY recommend the X2 Boom Beam and I am happy to do
business with LoPresti in the future. Two thumbs up on
Customer Service!" - Todd Gardner
"Well I finally had a chance to
use my recently installed LoPresti X2 Boom Beam landing
light and I'm happy to report that it's GREAT! ..... This
light is a marked improvement over the landing light our
plane comes with from the factory. .... This new
landing light does a much better job of lighting up the
runway which gives me better depth perception and I can see
the runway. I turn the runway lights down low (if not
off) when I'm on short final. The new LoPresti light
shined brightly and also allows you to see any wildlife
further down the runway; a problem here in Wisconsin.
Now it's not like the dual headlights on your car, but again
it's a substantial improvement." - Brian P. Johnson
"I too purchased an X2 Boom Beam
from LoPresti. The installation instructions were
straightforward (including pictures) and it took me about 20
minutes from beginning to end to make the swap. Anyone
who owns a screwdriver should to remove the old light and
install the new one. I had the opportunity to try it
out one night last week and what a difference! I could
easily see at least twice as far down the runway. In
addition, the peripheral areas seemed to me to be lit just
as well as with the old bulb." - Jim Warren

BoomBeam for
Cessna 172 R and S
Our
Boom Beam HID lighting systems improve lighting in
most cases by more than 500% and consists of a power
supply, shielded high voltage wire harness, plug in
HID lamp, mounting hardware, and your choice of lens
reflector assemblies.
For our round
reflectors we have Landing, and Intermediate beam
widths. The Landing beam has an exceedingly long
range and is a 10 degree circle, (stock sealed beams
are generally 10 wide by 5 high), and the
Intermediate also has a very long range but has the
advantage of a much larger "foot print" on the
runway, (our recommended light for single HID
systems) and is a 17 degree circle.
These systems are
available in 14 and 28 volt versions.
To make installation
as fast and as simple as possible we furnish
"ClickBond" fasteners that glue in place and hold
our power supply and wire harness. Virtually the
entire installation can be accomplished by gluing,
crimping and tie wrapping.
Our Boom Beam system
is FAA/PMA'd and STC'd for hundreds of aircraft
models and can be field approved on virtually every
other aircraft.

SUN-N-FUN
We really didn't know what to
expect this year at SNF given the economy but I must say we were
greatly surprised. SNF was a great success for LoPresti. Yes, we
sold all the Tacos we brought besides tons of kNotwax,
SpeedCoat, etcetera. We were so busy none of us had a chance to
see the displays. This was a get up at 5AM, shut down at 7PM,
get something to eat and off to bed. Well we did have a great
time at the Friday night air show with attendance at the
Aeroshell team party and the Crawfish Boil party at the
Kimball's display.
It
was interesting watching the Aeroshell team as #4, Gene's T6,
had two of our Boom Beam lights and he sure stood out. The team
is putting Boom Beams on all the aircraft. I wish Matt Younkin
had been able to fly his Beech 18 night show. He has 13 Boom
Beams on his airplane. Matt told us "it's unreal with all the
lights on. I can see the ground from 2,000 ft. when I point it
down." This is the first time Matt could use all the lights
during his show because his old type light exceeded his
available amperage. Now he has amperage to spare. When you have
a chance, check out both night shows. The lights look like
lasers cutting through their smoke.
As I said, we were all busy. I
don't know how many interviews I did but it was a lot; TV, radio
and print. It seems like every time I turned around -- BAM --
there was Allison dragging me off to another interview. She is a
good handler. If I wasn't interviewing, I was giving a talk at
the forums tent, in the air show briefing, signing autographs or
talking to people around the Fury. Oh, pictures, yes I also
posed for many pics with people interested in the Fury but David
LoPresti brought by a group of girls dressed in 1940's dress
that were knock out. We had fun taking these pictures. Yes, it's
part of the hard job I have -- its not easy being Corkey --
hahahaha, I love my briar patch.
Pictures
I
always enjoy flying in the air show at SNF. They remind me that
I flew in the first one many years ago.
Wayne Boggs the
Outstanding Air Boss, ran a tight, well organized show as
always. Wayne is a pleasure to work with; just do as he says and
he can adjust as needed and the crowd never knows. You know,
it's funny, I created a maneuver to tighten the Fury show when
needed, Peggy's Tango: a combination of 1/2 reverse 8 -- slow,
slow roll -- and a 1/2 Cuban 8. I had several air show
performers ask me about it saying it put a l ot
of action in front of the crowd in a short time and they may add
it. I named it in honor of Peggy LoPresti to remind people of
her involvement in the Fury project. Meet Peggy and you've met
the Queen Mum of the LoPresti Gang. She's a peach, funny and a
pleasure to be around. I must thank Walt Troyer for doing my
Fury narration. He always makes me look good, what a voice.
You've heard Walt at SNF and OSH for many years. He has many
stories and secrets about aircraft and performers.
There were two things that stand
out from SNF '09, yep, they both involve the opposite sex,
GIRLS! Hahahaha, there's always a woman involved, isn't there.
The first involved Jennifer, RJ's daughter, my friend and editor
of our blog. Now Jen is a very cute, petite, redhead, sharp as a
tack with a personality to boot. She has more experience putting
on the chute and getting in and out of the Fury than most as I
have tried to take her flying on several occasions only to have
something stop us. I figured I would give this female pilot her
chance to fly in the prestigious SNF air show by going along
with me when I flew the Fly-by portion of the event. I told her
I would fly the first fly-by to show her the prescribed course
then she would fly the rest of our four passes. As I dove in
from 1,500 ft. to 500 ft. for our first pass I got a WOW out of
her. She was smiling as I turned over the controls and like a
pro she followed my air path and passes. I knew she had flown
with RJ a great deal and RJ told me one of his Grummans was hers
so I would have loved to have had a picture of my face as we
taxied in and she looked at me and said "WOW, Corkey, now I
can't wait to get my license!"
She was kidding.
The second involved a young lady
about 12 or 13 years old. After my acro show on Saturday, as
they do, a convertible was there for me to ride in front of the
crowd. I told Allison, my handler, to get in with me as she
deserved some of the credit. As we rode past the announcers
building I noticed a young girl fight her way through crowd to
get to the fence. She had an autograph book in her hand and
wanted me to sign it but the car can't stop. I watched as she
ran behind the crowd for at least 150 yards then stopped and
slumped her shoulders in a surrendering gesture. I told Allison
when we finished talking with people at our booth we would go
find this young lady in the crowd. There were a lot of people at
the Fury but neither Allison nor I forgot the girl. Allison,
armed with pictures, a sharpie, and a pink LoPresti light hat,
grabbed me in mid sentence and said, "let's go find that little
girl." As we walked through the large crowd many people stopped
us to say how much they enjoyed the Fury show but my handler
keep me going on our quest -- she's good! It took awhile to find
her but when we did the young lady stood up with a surprised
look and eyes big as saucers. We approached her family, Mom,
Dad, and little brother, as she stood there in dismay with her
mouth open. She never said a word but nodded furiously as her
mom and dad explained that she loves airplanes and the Fury show
best of all the performers. I talked with her as I signed
pictures for her and gave her the pink Fury hat. She started to
talk, saying she couldn't believe I came to find her and how she
loves the Fury and wants to fly more than anything. By this time
a crowd gathered around us. Allison kept a supply of pictures in
my hand for me to sign when the young lady stepped back and made
my week. With hand on her hips, her pink hat on her head, she
and everyone looking on, she said loudly "CORKEY, YOU ROCK." My
handler then led me back to our booth as if I were a tiger being
lead to his cage. Thank you, Allison; job well done.
Oh, there is one other thing that
kept popping up at SNF during my interviews. Yep, there's
another woman involved, Patty Wagstaff. I was asked many times
if it were true that Patty and I were going to fly an air show
in Antarctica for the penguins -- hummmm could be, just stay
tuned. Oh yes, It was a fast and furious week.

First
Saturday at LoPresti
June 6th
"LoPresti First Saturday to benefit the Friends of St. Sebastian
River with guest speaker Scott Smith from Aspen Avionics.
"
LoPresti Aviation will host
another in their series of "First Saturday" events in the
LoPresti/Vero Beach Avionics hangar on the north ramp of
the Vero Beach airport
on June 6th starting at 9 am.
LoPresti First Saturday is about connecting
aviation to modern America.
As
a boy, Roy LoPresti hung around airports and airplanes every
chance he got. However, what was possible and even common 60
years ago, is neither today. Roy bemoaned the loss of innocence
and the lack of places for kids and pilots to meet.
So we opened "LeRoy's Cafe" as a place for pilots and the
community to "Hang Out". Later we added First Saturday to
formally bring the two together once a month with a full
breakfast, an interesting topic and a guest speaker. Any
proceeds we generate goes to a charity or a worthy cause. In
this way we get to give back to the community and provide a
place for pilots to gather. Best of all we get to do what Roy
wanted most...to share the dream of flight.

Speaker. Scott Smith- "Flying the Aspen
Display"

Aspen
Avionics specializes in bringing the most advanced
technology and capability from the commercial and
business aviation markets into General Aviation cockpits
-- and budgets. Our products increase situational
awareness and reduce pilot workload, making it even
easier and safer to fly in both VFR and IFR conditions.
The way we look at it, getting the latest avionics
technology shouldn't always mean spending a lot of money
-- on equipment or installation. At Aspen Avionics, we
design products to be affordable, easy to install, and
easy to own. |
Flying Magazine Reviews the EFD1000 PFD
"It's
clear that Aspen was setting the bar high when it set out to
certify the EFD1000 and to make it fly in hundreds of airplanes.
From our perspective, the company didn't just succeed at this
ambitious goal; it knocked it out of the park."
Flying's Robert Goyer reviewed the EFD1000
Primary Flight Display for the May, 2009 issue, and was clearly
impressed with the product and its features. Check out his
article on the Flying Magazine Website.
